Welcome to the Department of Computer Science at Southern Polytechnic State University, where we take pride in our high-quality, student-centered degree and certificate programs, which are enhanced by state of the art instructional technology and applied research activities. The distinctions of our programs include high quality and accessibility to both traditional and non-traditional students.
For undergraduates, we offer both Bachelor of Science (ABET-accredited) and Bachelor of Arts degrees in Computer Science as well as a Professional Certificate in Computer Programming. Our graduates are well-prepared for professional positions and technical challenges in software design and development as well as in related areas of the computing field. Our class schedules try to accommodate both full-time students as well as those that either land jobs even before completing their degrees or are already working when they choose to enhance their credentials. We also offer a minor in Computer Science.
Our graduate programs include a Master's degree and a Graduate Transition Certificate. The M.S. program with major in Computer Science (MSCS) builds on top of a solid foundation of the discipline that has matured over the past several decades, and provides advanced course work in CS. The many electives in the program allow for an exposure to the emerging areas such as Distributed Programming, Soft Computing, Graphics and Image Processing, Programming Languages, Software Engineering, Computer Architecture, Networks, etc., as well as current topics. The Master's courses are all taught by full-time faculty holding doctorates or occasionally by a qualified individual with industry experience. In addition to welcoming full-time students with degrees in Computer Science, we also cater to two major non-traditional groups of students: those whose schedules allow only for part-time studies and those with baccalaureate degrees in other majors. For the first group, we offer almost all of our classes during the evenings (and a few on Saturdays). For the second group of students, courses are offered that allow them to "transition" into the Master's courses. The six transition courses are packaged into the credit-based Graduate Transition Certificate in Computer Science (GTCCS).
In
addition to a wide selection of courses, the programs allow students to take
advantage of the many opportunities: Many
graduate and research
assistantships are available, as are several
student assistant positions, some through sponsored research.
The colloquium series features talks by invited
speakers on current topics in the discipline.
You
will find links to information on our degree and certificate programs, the
colloquium series, our research, and many other topics at this web site. Other topics of interest are at the
School of CSE web pages. I welcome your suggestions
on how this web site can be improved and on how we can serve our constituencies, namely,
our students, the community at large, and the taxpayers better.
